Our Home Sweet TEXAS Home

We arrived at the Anahuac Wildlife Refuge in Anahuac, TX today......on the tail of a tornado and a thunderstorm.  Fortunately after we left San Antonio we received a phone call from our volunteer coordinator letting us know that they had severe weather and to be alert.  So...that woke us up. We were very glad for the call.  I checked on the Smart Phone to see what was up and sure enough there was Tornado and Thunderstorm alerts for the area until 2pm.  We arrived in our spot at 3pm.  The highways through Houston were a sloppy mess, but Dale did great.  I was the one with the white knuckles.  Then when we arrived at our RV spot it was still raining so we had to get backed into our spot and get the jacks down and unhitched in the rain.  I'm sure we were quite the sight.  I had my hooded rain jacket on and my walkie talkie in hand so I could direct Dale into the spot.  A couple of our new neighbors came out to assist.  One woman came to give me an umbrella...but I assured her I was fine...with my hood and wanted both of my hands free.  Poor Dale was a drowned rat by the time he got everything hooked up.  Electric, Water, Sewer....all the necessities of life.  But after a change of clothes and some dinner I think all is right with the world once again.  Well almost.....we don't have our Satelite Dish hooked up yet...so NO TV.

We received a phone call from the coordinator and she already has training lined up for us tomorrow.  I told her we had to work in grocery shopping sometime tomorrow and she was quite agreeable to let us train at our own pace.  Oh.....and much to our surprise there are mosquitos here....even in the rain.  They must be hardy little things.  I'm thinking we'll have to get out the bug spray.....in January.   I'm hoping no rain for tomorrow.

San Antonio 1-23-2012

We're in San Antonio for a couple of days.  We went to New Braunfels and historic Gruene this afternoon.  Gruene was the best.  The oldest dance hall in Texas is there.  I loved that little town. Tuesday we made the best of our time and took a bus tour.  They took us to the Missions, The Alamo, a Mexican Marketplace, a Japanese Garden, The Buckhorn Saloon ( the oldest Saloon in Texas) and we were suppose to go on a boat ride down The Riverwalk, but because it was raining the boats weren't running.  Sooooo, they took us to the Texas Living History museum.  It was great fun.  We went to so many more places then if we would have driven ourselves.    I guess we'll have to come back sometime since we didn't get to ride the boat:)

Fredericksburg, TX 1/21/12

We've been enjoying ourselves in Fredericksburg the past few days.  We took a trip out to Enchanted Rock State Park.  Our luck - it was closed and wasn't going to be opened for another 2 hours.  They were doing some roadwork or something.  I thought it was ignorant of them to do that at 11am on a Saturday morning.  Oh well I took a couple of pictures.  At least we have that.  We've eaten German food...including streudel....oh so good.   Our campsite was at the Lady Bird Municipal Park.  There was an airport and golf course on the property.  It was quite fun listening to those little planes coming and going.  I loved this town.

Texas Bound

We left Arizona on Tuesday, Jan 17th (our 42nd anniversary).  We made it as far as El Paso.  Celebrated "our day" at the Texas Roadhouse.  The food was wonderful.  Wednesday we continued our trip and made it to Fredericksburg.  We arrived about 6:30 and it was getting dark.  The first RV park we went to was FULL.  We tried the campground at Lady Bird Municipal Park.  They had room for us.  It was hard parking the RV in the dark.  With walkie talkies and flashlights we got that accomplished.  We'll try to get to our RV spots earlier in the future. This RV park is great...much better in the daylight.  There is a golf course and airstrip on the park property.  We plan on staying here 5 nights.  Fredricksburg has a Traders Market the 3rd Saturday of the month.  So we timed our visit perfect.  We'll be sure to check that out.  We did visit the LBJ Ranch today and took a tour of the "Texas Whitehouse"  It's a National Park now.  The ranch is wonderful and has a river running by it. We stopped at the Fredericksburg Pie Shop.  It was fun...and the pie was wonderful.  I loved their signs.

Holidays 2012

What a great holiday season.  Christmas Day we had a wonderful potluck supper with all the other volunteers.  New Years Eve we had a bonfire, drinks and snacks with several of our "neighbors" in our campground.  What a great time we had.  There was certainly alot of activity around here during the holidays.  There were a BBQ sponsored by the Friends of Kartchner Caverns for the volunteers in appreciation of what we do.  Then there was the all office potluck in addition to our Christmas Day potluck supper.  Plenty of food to eat around here in December....that's for sure.  We've had some really cold days in December.  We actually had some mornings that were 21.  We had to go out and buy some heat tape to keep our water from freezing.  Christmas Day was pretty cold...but this week has been nice...in the high 60's & low 70's.  We have loved it here.  We'll be heading to Texas in a few weeks.  I'll keep you posted on that.
